Set high above on egotism’s pinnacle,
blandly self-confident, of dignified mien;
viewing mankind with outlook so cynical,
with discipline guiding the daily routine;
polyglot traveller, and erudite wag,
shall we ever forget your mordacious wit,
your penchant for quoting some apt Latin tag,
or zeal for avoiding infinitives split?
Driving the ‘Progress’; advising ‘Inspection’;
now formidably firm; now subtly benign,
seeking a clue for lost pencil’s detection,
with slide-rule perusing a draughtsman’s design:
thus memory, still, recalls each changing phase,
and its tribute to undoubted talent pays.
