Danced she not as one who dances
on a stage in lively measure;
but as joyous heart elances,
lives, and moves in rhythmic pleasure.
Moved she gaily, and with vigour
trod the steps in Czech tradition;
lifted skirt and lithesome figure,
whirling, knew no inhibition.
Danced she there as one inspired,
Smetana himself to pleasure;
peasant maid by peasant squired,
tripping thro’ the festive leisure.
