May the roses of virtue which bloom
in the sun-bathéd realms of your soul,
ever lighten my heart of its gloom,
when ambition ne’er reaches its goal.
May their colours illumine my mind,
with a richness of exquisite thought,
that in absence of thee I may find
inspiration thy presence once brought.
May their perfume endow me with grace,
to abhor what I know well to be,
be it ever so minute a trace,
in its essence unworthy of thee.
