The belt of Time encinctures history;
each epicyclic loop significant
for teleologists, say Gibbon or
George Grote, to show how sure the rise and fall
of empires.
Analogy disturbs: consider the
invertebrate ecology awhile;
our scientists reveal an ebb and flow
of species – Might is Right until a change,
a softening of armour, undermines:
the strong survival quotient fails and then …
reversal.
And now us. In what degree of arc
our present state? The loop revolves to bring
annihilation … or colour TV.
