Heed not the drum’s inspiring note,
nor the splendour of flags unfurled;
because pageantry bright of martial might,
can endanger a peaceful world.
Hear not inanely loyal cries,
lauding Homeland, if wrong or right;
for each dangerous phrase of misplaced praise,
aids the brutal that crave to fight.
’Tis not to deprecate the deeds
of the heroes who fought and fell;
that these cautioning lines show adverse signs,
but to teach what the dead would tell.
